BASTI THERAPY

Basti therapy, also known as Ayurvedic enema therapy, is one of the main treatments in Ayurveda. It involves the administration of medicated herbs or oils into the rectum to cleanse and balance the doshas, especially Vata.

Types of Basti and Their Uses

1. Niruha Basti (Enema with herbal decoction):

Also known as "Vasti"." It is a cleansing enema prepared with herbal decoctions, oils, and medicinal ingredients. It is used for detoxification, balancing Vata, and treating chronic conditions.

2. Anuvasana Basti (Oil enema):

This involves the use of medicated oil. It is mainly nourishing and lubricating, used to pacify Vata and provide strength. It is often used after Niruha Basti or for Gentle daily use.

3. Lekhana Basti:

Used specifically for fat reduction and detoxification, often containing herbs that promote cleansing.

4. Yusha Basti:

A type of medicated enema containing specific herbal formulations suitable for certain conditions like weakness or wisdom-related issues.

How Basti Therapy is Performed

Preparation:

  • The patient is usually advised to fast or have a light diet before the procedure.
  • The environment is kept calm and hygienic.
  • The patient is positioned comfortably (lying on their left side is common).

Procedure:

  • The selected herbal decoction or oil is prepared fresh.
  • The lubricant (like sesame oil) is applied to the enema nozzle.
  • The patient gently inserts the nozzle into the rectum.
  • The medicated liquid is slowly introduced into the rectum.
  • The patient is asked to retain the enema for a specific period, depending on the type.
  • After the retention time, the patient expels the contents naturally.

Post-Treatment:

  • Rest and gentle diets are recommended.
  • Hydration is encouraged to aid detoxification.
